SXSW Songwriters

Rebecca Loebe, John Brodeur, Rachael Sage are meeting folks at SXSW.

Rebecca's latest album GIVE UP YOUR GHOSTS (on Austin's Blue Corn Records) features GROWING UP, a collection of poignant observations on how things change.  Sounding like one of Ed Sheeran's waltzes, GROWING UP''s hook "growing old, getting over it."  


Rebecca has two shows: Thursday, May 14: Driskill, 604 Brazos Street, at 9 PM CT 
Friday March 15: Saxon Pub, 1320 W. Lamar at 8 PM

Then it’s off to Europe, including her March 31 show in London at The Green Note.

Bird Streets is John Brodeur's new project, with production from Jason Falkner (Jellyfish, TV Eyes). John is also in Austin.  Newly signed to Omnivore records, the label is ripping him for syncs, and I'm plugging his songs. Listen to "Betting on the Sun," which is sounds like Elvis Costello meets Brian Wilson.   




Rachael Sage has been an inspiration to friends for years.  She's performing Saturday afternoon, March 16  at 4:45 PM CT, at Art.Work, 201 E 5th St., in Austin.

Rachael performs in London on May 16 at the Bedford.
Next week she's releasing an acoustic album  (PSEUDOMYOPIA) of songs from her current full band collection: MYOPIA.

"Alive" is such an upbeat song, listing topical possibilities "including microfilm being pulled out of the archive," " the olympics where nobody ever cheats!"  She mentions Frida Kahlo,  and the hook "IT’S GOOD TO BE ALIVE."

Great Outdoors-Inspired Songs

CLIMB THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN by Gary Lucas (co-writer of Jeff Buckley’s hits MOJO PIN and GRACE, and Joan Osborne’s Grammy-nominated song SPIDER WEB). Gary’s soaring and motivational rock song with horns and a wailing chorus, “Climb the highest mountain so you can stand tall!” 

Gary and his rock band, Gods and Monsters, will perform at the Iridium, NYC, on May 31. He’ll include some of his classic Chinese pop with long-time collaborator singer Feifei Yang. Classic folks from the NYC rock and punk scene (bassist Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers, Elliott Murphy, David Johansen), and drummer Billy Ficca (Television, Waitresses, Washington Squares), and saxophonist/analog studio owner Jason Candler) are in Gary’s band. Ernie, Billy and Jason do sessions. 

Then look for a full show of Chinese Pop from Gary and Feifei, on July 25, at  The Loft at City Winery NYC

8pm.  That show will feature dreamy ’30s Shanghai Pop, 

and new Mandarin versions of songs by Bob Dylan and other great artists.

FROM EVERY MOUNTAINSIDE by Dan Berggren is for the Fourth of July, and is the same melody of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Dan's version is about fighting for the environment and liberty to keep us strong.
