The Peace Train band features Sharon on guitar and vocals, Wendy Quick (vocals); Richard Hill Jr. (bass), Suzzette Ortiz (keyboards); Eric Roberts (Drums); Jan Jeffries (Percussion) and David Church (sax & flute).

World renowned for leading South Africa’s first 500-voice multiracial and multicultural performing group to help promote Nelson Mandela’s election in Post-Apartheid South Africa, Sharon Katz is a guitarist, singer and composer from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth/ Nelson Mandela Bay) in South Africa. A multiple award-winning film, When Voices Meet was made about Katz’s social activism.  

In recent years, she has facilitated musical projects with children living on the USA Mexico border, who survived torture and trafficking rings in San Diego and Tijuana. Sharon has conceived and directed productions with orchestras, and choirs in South Africa, the United States, Cuba and Mexico and has many albums to her credit including the most recent “We Can Be The Change” and “For You.”      

This year she’ll be publishing a multi-media songbook, “Songs and Stories of Sharon Katz & The Peace Train” featuring ten of the Sharon’s songs along with choral parts, guitar chords, and archival photographs of The Peace Train project. The book also features QR codes and links to videos and recordings of the songs. Look for the book’s physical and digital release on all platforms on September 18^th.

Songs from the new Songbook will be performed at the upcoming concerts, as well as songs from other albums that have been on the Grammy ballot.  She will include favorite covers from South African superstars, most notably Miriam Makeba.

Sharon has worked with Ms. Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Pete Seeger, and is featured on the “Carnival!” album with Sting, Madonna and Elton John. In 2019 she received the Phil Ochs Award in recognition of her music and activism.

In addition to the September concerts on the East Coast, this October, the San Diego based Classics4Kids will present 7 concerts featuring Sharon Katz performing with the Classics4Kids Philharmonic Orchestra. Several of the songs in “Songs and Stories of Sharon Katz & The Peace Train” will be on the program that will reach thousands of San Diego school students.

Global in Sound, Musicians, and Message

Take everything you love about South African rhythms and choirs; mix in some Cuban magic; add a dose of Philly jazz; tackle issues of love, loss, and adversity; and you get the latest album from global activists Sharon Katz & The Peace Train.

The gorgeously layered tracks were recorded in South Africa, Mexico and the USA, including an appearance by South African choir, Thee Legacy, produced by Sibongiseni Shabalala of Ladysmith Black Mambazo fame. You’ll do a double take when you hear the vocals and think LBM’s lead singer, the late Joseph Shabalala, has come back to add his voice to “What Can We Do/ Sizokwenzenjani.”  Sharon and Joseph started working together in South Africa in 1992 - and Ladysmith Black Mambazo traveled aboard Sharon’s original journey of The Peace Train in 1993 when Sibongiseni was still a youth - so it truly is a legacy track.

Those familiar with previous albums may need a tissue when listening to “Sister of the Soul/Siswami,”  a tribute to Nonhlanhla Wanda who co-founded The Peace Train with Sharon is 1992 and tragically passed away this year. The Zulu choir, Afrika Mamas, adds its haunting harmonies to summon the ancestors and honor this beloved Sister.

“Think It Over” sounds like a pop dance track, and the intention is to make it popular to support marginalized groups anywhere in the world. This has been The Peace Train’s mission since its apartheid-busting origins and continues with its projects around the globe. Sparked by a situation involving the Trans community, it also addresses diversity, equity, and inclusion issues worldwide. Drawing on Sharon’s music therapy work with girls rescued from trafficking, “La Tristeza” champions the resiliency of those subjected to such atrocities.

On a lighter note, the bouncy rhythms of “Baja California” will make you feel like you’re swaying in sync with the Pacific Ocean and falling in love while traveling down the Baja peninsula of Mexico. Then the traditional medley of “Hamba Joba/ Moea Thulamele Hae” will have you on your feet dancing in true South African style.

Aptly titled For You, Sharon honors her faithful fan base in her message on this album:  the extraordinary people I’ve met along my journey; the issues and challenges that have confronted us; and most importantly, the love and support we’ve shared.

Sharon Katz & Nonhlanhla Wand 2019 Tour: South Africa, United States, Cuba, Tijuana

Join Sharon & Nonhlanhla Wanda’s 25th Anniversary Creating Music Together

Musician/humanitarian Sharon Katz (originally from Port Elizabeth, South Africa) and singer/teacher, Nonhlanhla Wanda (from Durban,South Africa) celebrate 25 years of worldwide touring and musical collaboration. Some of the celebration includes duo shows in South Africa with performances in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town in early 2019. Later on the two have performances and workshops in the United States, Cuba, and more border concerts with children from San Diego and Tijuana in Mexico. 

The South African tour revisits cities that Sharon, Nonhlanhla, & the Peace Train visited just over 25 years ago, Dec. 1993, in South Africa. Sharon remembers that as a bonding time with everyone living together on the Peace Train, “as an experiment that for the first time in our history we could live and travel together as a multiracial group across the country. Nonhlanha and I, from opposite sides of the race divide, were able to achieve that as musicians and activists. We had 100 singers and a 12-piece band plus crew and parents as chaperones, a TV crew and invited Ladysmith Black Mambazo to join us.”   

The international performers recorded their current album SIDE-BY-SIDE with producer Malcolm Nhleko of Maltre Studios. The Afro-Jazz-Contemporary fusion album features all original compositions by Nonhlanhla and Sharon and showcases their distinctive voices and gorgeous harmonies complemented by the instrumental virtuosity of Sharon on guitar; Qhubekani Mthethwa on bass; Charles Boykie Mnomiya on drums; and Sanele Phakathi on piano and synthesizer.

Sharon and Nonhlanhla are also the subjects of the multiple-award winning film, “When Voices Meet.” It documents the role of The Peace Train in creating South Africa’s first, 500-voice multiracial youth choir in KwaZulu-Natal in 1993; its groundbreaking concert tour across the country in support of the first democratic elections; The Peace Train’s first tour of America after President Mandela was elected; and the long-term impact of the project as told by the participants 20 years later. The film, which premiered at the Durban International Film Festival, has won awards at over 30 film festivals around the world and been broadcast in over 50 countries. John Kani and Abigail Kubeka are also featured in the film.

In 2018 The Peace Train initiated a multi-national project called “Transcending Barriers” which is designed to foster peaceful relationships between the countries of Mexico, Cuba, South Africa and the USA. In June 2019, Katz will perform with 2,000 children in Tijuana Mexico, and in November she will present a full production featuring Cuban, South African, American and Mexican children at the 33^rd International Choir Festival in Santiago de Cuba.

The duo contributes proceeds from their concerts and CD sales toward social development projects in South Africa, including supporting a children’s home, bursaries for orphans, after-school cultural programmes, and therapeutic music projects across the country.  Sharon Katz will also join Mlungisi Gegana in concerts to benefit the Mlungisi Academy in Queenstown. 

In addition to their own CDs, the group was recorded on the Carnival! album with Sting, Tina Turner, Elton John and Madonna. They have also recorded with Dolly Rathebe and Abigail Kubeka and featured Ladysmith Black Mambazo on The Peace Train’s original tour.

Wonderful things are happening because of Sharon Katz & The Peace Train’s upcoming performance, TRANSCENDING BARRIERS with Mexican and American children on July 21.  One of the children—a ten year old will be seeing her mother again. 

Here are the details of TRANSCENDING BARRIERS on July 21, 2018:

For several years, Sharon Katz & The Peace Train has been working with diverse groups on the West Coast of the USA to promote multicultural understanding, respect and peaceful, constructive action. In 2018, they  extended that work to Mexico.

Working with our partner in Tijuana: Promotora de las Bellas Artes, they have been training singers on both sides of the California/Mexico border. On July 21st singers & supporters from throughout California will converge in San Diego, and travel across the border to meet up with the Mexican singers. After a series of workshops and rehearsals, they will perform a Unity Concert on the Esplanada of the gorgeous performing arts center in Tijuana, Centro Cultural Tijuana.  

10 AM: Parade from the WorldBeat Cultural Center (2100 Park Blvd, San Diego, California, 619-230-1190) to the San Diego Trolley at City College Station and travel to the border crossing at San Ysidro. Those with passports will walk across the border; those without will cheer them on! 

12:00 Noon: Meet with singers and supporters from Promotora from the City of Tijuana who will escort us as we Sing & Parade for approximately 20 minutes to Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT).  

From 1 till 5 PM, there will be workshops and meals for the singers.
