Tom Ciurczak's Music Video "The Watcher"

 The first music video from Americana Singer-Songwriter Tom Ciurczak's upcoming album, “Yorick,” is called "The Watcher." 

“The Watcher” is Tom’s song about an alien looking for the other aliens that left him as he treks across the planet earth at “every alien crash site” according to the song lyrics. “The song is my take on the origins of the “Men In Black,” he says. “He was dropped off thousands of years ago to carve the ‘Nazca Lines’ and then for whatever reason, the Aliens never came back to get him. Feeling abandoned on the planet, he gets depressed and laments about his former life traveling the universe and wonders why they left him. He goes into mourning and starts dressing in black and decides to start showing up at all the Alien related sites throughout history hoping he’ll get noticed and rescued in time for supper.”

“The Watcher” music video includes Tom being photobombed into historical scenes from the pyramids to the fall of the Roman Empire, to climbing frozen cliffs.  Thousands of years later a spaceship finds him, and he’s swooped up to return home, but not in time for supper!

Taking songwriting tips from artists like Bruce Springsteen, Warren, Zevon, and Steve Earle (who was his teacher at a songwriting camp he attended in 2014, which got him on the road to finishing song ideas and creating new ones), “I knew I found my tribe!” A transplanted New Yorker living in Southern California, Tom put together his prestigious recording team of producer/drummer Stephen Haaker, sound engineer Brett Grossman and a number of A-List of studio musicians to record his first CD, the powerfully-combustive “Call Me Ishmael.”  Follow up releases were a 2021 single “Christmas Time in Hollywood” his second CD, “I Ain’t Ever Growing Up,” and 2023’s “I Ain’t Ever Growing Up-Volume II” and an ep, “Christmas Time in Hollywood.” He and five other songwriters from the Steve Earle tribe put together “Muscle Shoals Record Shop” recorded at Muscle Shoals legendary Cypress Moon Studio, home of the Swampers (aka Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section)!    

Tom performs with his band at music venues throughout Southern California to promote his own brand of Heartland Rock. Dec 4 The Indie Collaborative Plays New York City's Green Room 42

 

The highly diversified and always entertaining, international music group, THE INDIE COLLABORATIVE returns to New York City on Monday night, December 4 to celebrate the holiday season in grand musical style at one of New York’s most exciting nightclubs, The Green Room 42.   A cast of award-winning artists from the Classical, Broadway, American Roots, Jazz, and Global Music worlds will take the stage to honor Hanukkah, Christmas, Diwali, Kwanzaa, and the Winter Solstice in song and dance, beginning at 7 PM.

Co-founded in 2015 by Emmy Award^® Winning writer and producer, Eileen Sherman, and Billboard Top Ten charting American Roots singer/songwriter, Grant Maloy Smith, “THE IC” boasts a distinguished group of over 2000 independent artists, many of whom are Grammy, Emmy, Tony, and music chart toppers from around the globe. Grant and Eileen conceived the idea of an arts organization that would foster unique and exciting collaborations (crossing genres and continents) while forging lifelong friendships.  

Members of THE IC can be found any night of the year, performing in the world’s most prestigious concert halls, but every so often, Eileen and Grant curate an Indie Collaborative Concert highlighting a variety of their members. Every production is unique. Previous shows include evenings at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and just this past summer, Eileen and Grant produced a special showcase in Newcastle, England.  Each show amazes the audience by its sheer diversity and extraordinary artistry and December 4 in New York City will be no different. 

Per IC tradition, Grant Maloy Smith will serve as the emcee, with a line-up that has something for everyone!  As always, be on the lookout for terrific on-stage IC collaborations.

Honoring Diwali, is South Indian-born composer and piano prodigy, Charu Suri with outstanding Jazz guitarist, the Indian-born Noshir Mody. They will be performing Charu’s “Floating,” from her highly acclaimed album, RAGAS AND WALTZES. 

Native American Connor Chee, a multi-award winner and brilliant pianist and composer will perform an original composition honoring the Winter Solstice.

The Bluestone Sisters’ Songwriting Team (Gail/music; Eileen lyrics) will offer two songs from their holiday catalog. The jazzy and very comical “The Dreidel Song” from their Emmy Award^® winning Hanukkah musical THE ODD POTATO, will be performed by one of Broadway’s most sought-after dancers, Ryan VanDenBoom (MJ, Something Rotten!, Bandstand, Annie) with the award-winning jazz pianist, Alex Otey.

The Sisters’ second song honors the holiday of Kwanzaa. “Kwanzaa’s Pure Light” will be performed by Gospel star Yocontalie with the Jennifer Tibbetts Singers. This piece has been described as a “musical gumbo,” part Jazz, part Gospel, part Afrobeat, part Spoken Word, and all brilliantly arranged by Yocontalie (vocals), Keith Middleton (percussion), and Alex Otey (instrumental /chorus). Joining Yocontalie is Jennifer Tibbetts (Youth Choir Director and her young choir), remarkable percussionists Ricky Persaud,Jr.,  Jean Carno-Rosneberg, and Valerie Persaud, with the very adept musical theatre composer Jerome Brooks, Jr. (piano), jazz/fusion artist, Mowgli Giannitti (bass), and Alex Otey (flugelhorn).  

The gorgeous vocals of Elaine Romanelli will melt holiday hearts with her original Christmas Song, “Christmas Any Time.”

Providing the classical component of the evening is two-time GRAMMY^® winner Herschel Garfein, with world-renowned cellist, Sophie Shao. Together they will perform Mr. Garfein’s “When the Moon Was Covered,“ from his newest album, LAYERS. All About the Arts called it “intensely emotional and inspired chamber music.”

And no IC concert is complete without some music from IC co-founder Grant Maloy Smith, who will be presenting a unique Christmas medley. He’ll be joined on stage by one of New York’s favorite sax players, Thomas Hutchings (saxophone), Noshir Mody (guitar), Charu Suri (piano), Mowgli (bass), and more. 

As always, the grand finale of every IC concert will be the sing-along theme song “We’ll Stay Together,” performed by a variety of surprise IC guest stars!

Orleans Celebrates Christmas With New Album, “New Star Shining” On Sunset Blvd. Records

Orleans is releasing their first and only Christmas album.  Subconsciously, the group—which is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022—must have been working on the holiday collection for decades. 

Orleans co-founder Lance Hoppen says, "The material comes from various sources, most written internally and some by friends from other bands. Some had previously recorded lives elsewhere and were remastered, others had previous starts but underwent major revisions and upgrades. Some were cut from scratch in isolation. Some are purely secular, while others center around the Christmas story.”

John and Johanna Hall co-wrote the title track, “New Star Shining” which the band recorded in 1994 for a “Woodstock Holidays” CD released only in Japan. The group’s only Christmas song until now, it was also cut as a duet by Ricky Skaggs and James Taylor. This version features shared lead vocals by John, Larry Hoppen, Lance and Bob Leinbach. The acclaimed songwriting duo also co-wrote “Snowed In With You,”  “I Wish I Could’ve Been There” with Tad Richards, and "Quiet Place" with Jonell Mosser.  “I Wish” features Little Feat’s Bill Payne on piano and multi-instrumentalist John Jorgenson (the Desert Rose Band and The Hellecasters) playing mandolin. "Snowed In" shines with Dan Dugmore's pedal steel and Andrea Zonn's fiddle.

Two more historical recordings came from the Hoppen family.  Lance found his late brother Larry’s version of “Winter Wonderland” on YouTube, which was recorded for a 2010 Rock Xmas Foundation charity.  Larry, Lance, brother Lane and sister Lynda sang the introduction of the traditional song “Mary Had a Baby” around 1985 at a Hoppen Family holiday gathering; Lance found the tape, a snippet of which was digitized and included.  The band then recreated the entire four-part harmony arrangement during the pandemic.

Fly Amero contributed three songs: "Jinglin' In New England" was written with his wife Donna. Other Fly songs include “Ballad of the Christmas Day Cowboy” (a collaboration with platinum country writer Robert Ellis Orrall) and “I Wish I Could Fly”, written with Allen Estes, featuring Beaver Brown Band’s keyboardist, Steve Burke.

Other songs include “Mary’s Christmas,” originally recorded by The Little River Band, and “I’m Coming Home for Christmas” originally recorded by Ambrosia's Joe Puerta.  “The Sound of Christmas” came from Orleans alumnus Chip Martin, who’s written for Billy Paul and Randy Meisner.

Orleans’ “New Star Shining” will be on all digital platforms and available in music stores and holiday catalogs.

 The band went from club and college shows in the Northeast to worldwide acclaim with their top ten singles "Still the One," Dance With Me," and "Love Takes Time.”  Orleans has produced a body of work spanning 16 albums and several DVDs. The band’s music is still streamed millions of times a week and featured in TV, movie and commercial productions.
