Classic Rock Performers

Here are songs from my Classic Rock Artists.

CHANGE WILL COME by Elliott Murphy
Springsteen-ish in tempo akin to “Badlands.” Harmonica with jangly guitar, drums, keyboards, bass. Theme of a noble effort to please a girl more than his career. (Smithereens drummer Jim Babjak plays drums on this)

ROAD GAMES by Allan Holdsworth (w/ vocals from England’s Paul Williams)
Seeing mirages along the road on a hard journey.  Has a rock / fusion Rush vibe.

LUCKY STARS by Dean Friedman & Denise Marsa
Duet song; the woman confronts him in a teasing kind of a way about an old flame, and they both resolve to thank their lucky stars that “we’re not as smart as we’d like to think we are.”

FRIENDS by Gentle Giant
FRIENDS is singer-songwriter folk, and great for commercials or tender scenes.  Paisley Song written by John Weathers.

Spirited Instrumentals

Spirited music is our name and game and work! :)
All my New York City-area friends are invited to the Cutting Room, on Friday, April 27, at 7:30 PM for  Legends of Boston.
Who are these Boston musicians? Two different acts: Magic Dick & Shun Ng AND Johnny A. (and his guitars.)
Magic Dick is J. Geils' harmonica player and Shun is an entertaining acoustic guitar player, and he reminds me of an acoustic Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen rolled into one with a voice inspired by Michael Jackson. In fact, Quincy Jones says he was blown away by both Shun's  "soul and his science – his creativity and his uniqueness is astounding.”

This is their song: SPACE, which is available for licensing.
Follow the link for their cover of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxAZ3YyjtPg
Johnny A. and his guitars cover the Left Banke's “Walk Away Renee”: https://youtu.be/9IRetoeEecc
He'll be doing a set of British Invasion SongBook.

This is the link to order tickets for Magic Dick & Shun Ng and Johnny A.. https://tickets.thecuttingroomnyc.com/event/1655553

The Cutting Room is at 44 East 32nd Street, in New York, and the phone number is 212-691-1900. The website is http://thecuttingroomnyc.com.

Quick heads up about Holiday music including Halloween songs like the Gentle Giant instrumental, SPOOKY BOOGIE.  Hammond organ and great horror cues!

Here is some end of the summer news from SOUL MOVES MUSIC.

We're celebrating a new release, THIS PLANET WE CALL HOME from Dan Berggren.
His song ”No More Walls" has impactful lyrics: “No more walls, we’ll build bridges between our differences — no more walls" is the songs important message.

Here's a feature that North Country Public Radio conducted with Dan:
Look for some new albums from our progressive rockers, Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius plus Gentle Giant's THREE PIECE SUITE on CD, Vinyl and BluRay; THREE PIECE SUITE are Steven Wilson remixes from the first 3 Gentle Giant albums (Giant, Acquiring the Taste, Three Friends).  Both Joe Deninzon & Gentle Giant releases will be out on September 29.

This is the dramatic, declarative prog rock song, Peel The Paint as mixed by Mr. Wilson. It shows the anguish an artist goes through.

I’m performing live in the evening on Monday, August 28 at the legendary Bitter End's Indie Collaborative.
Accompanying me is multi-instrumentalist Alex Otey on trumpet.  His website is http://www.alexotey.com. I join over 50 performers, mainly musicians. I’m a poet (which includes songwriting), and my poetry book, THE LEIGHTON EXPLOSION sold great both in crowdfunding and through mail order. (visit:
The Bitter End is at 147 Bleecker Street (between Thompson and LaGuardia),
New York City.
The INDIE COLLABORATIVE takes place from 1 till 4 PM, and 7-10:30 PM
Venue phone is 212-673-7030
Admission is $25 and available online at: http://indiecollaborative.com/Tickets/index.php

Summer holiday closes out with celebrations of successes from both Phoebe Legere and Rebecca Loebe.
Phoebe's HEART OF LOVE (Optimistic Kitty) broke Americana'sTop 20, and helped sign her to the legendary Artic Records for an EP due early 2018.
This is MEN FROM BOYS, which is about what makes gentlemen, with lines including: “some men play the notes, other guys are the music.”

Rebecca's album BLINK was spotlighted in her adopted hometown paper, The Austin Chronicle the week she opened for Livingston Taylor there: https://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2017-08-11/rebecca-loebe-blink/  “Most striking is the Patsy Cline-inspired ‘Say So,’ wherein you look longingly at your partner on a Fifties dance floor and plead with them to hold onto you forever. There's something for everyone on Blink.”

Lots of Christmas music--here's a punky version of Tang's "Why Can't Every Day Be Christmas."

Gentle Giant will release “Three Piece Suite”

On September 29th 2017 Gentle Giant will release “Three Piece Suite.”

Gentle Giant—Three Piece Suite is a specially curated selection of songs and compositions from the band’s first three albums (Giant, Acquiring the Taste, Three Friends) presented in both 5.1 surround sound and stereo. There are nine tracks from the albums, plus a pre-debut song, remixed by Steven Wilson. The choices were determined by the limited availability of multi-track master tapes from the era. Only a few songs from each album are known to exist as multi-tracks, with the rest presumably lost.

Three Piece Suite is available in the following formats:
*A two-disc digipak containing 96/24 animated Blu-ray plus CD.
*A single disc digipak CD.
*A two-disc gatefold LP in180g high-end vinyl.
*A digital download of the two disc Blu-Ray plus CD version.

Gentle Giant’s Three Piece Suite includes the songs “Giant,” “Nothing At All,” and “Why Not” from the first album “Giant.”
“Pantagruel’s Nativity,” “The House, The Street, The Room” from the second album “Acquiring The Taste.”
“Schooldays,” “Peel the Paint,” “Mr. Class And Quality,” and “Three Friends” from the album “Three Friends” completes the list of the original recorded material.

The band and Steven Wilson are including a previously commercially unreleased song “Freedom’s Child” taken from the first recording sessions with legendary producer Tony Visconti.

The liner notes by Interviewer Anil Prasad include reflections from Gentle Giant’s members about the writing and recording sessions.

Steven Wilson and Tony Visconti share their incredible observations about the early days of this unique collection of timeless music from one of progressive rock’s most influential bands.

Tony Visconti recounts:
“I was a very optimistic young man in 1970…I thought music like theirs would save the world from mediocrity. I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth in it. I championed their cause by becoming sympathetic to the point where I temporarily joined the band for both albums. I modified their arrangements and pulled off some stunning audio effects that gave their sound more depth and immediacy. The band knew I was on their side. I remember there being a great feeling of camaraderie during the sessions.”

Steven Wilson explains:
“To create the new mixes, I used Logic as the software and Universal Audio plug-ins, which provide emulations of classic analog outboard effects, channel strips and old mixing desks…I used these tools to clean things up and bring out some more clarity, detail and definition in some of the instrumental interplay. There was never a question of trying to outdo the original mixes, but offer different perspectives on them.”

Tony Visconti continues:
“In our own way, we’ve touched the ears, minds and hearts of thousands of true believers.”

The band members, collectively, feel there are still good reasons its fans continue to enjoy Gentle Giant’s music and why it continues to be discovered by new generations.

For fans of Gentle Giant “Three Piece Suite” is a must have.  For fans of great musicianship and progressive rock this is an incredible insight into the earliest days of this legendary band.

Ed Arnold Heads to Gentle Giant in-store in Philadelphia, October 1

Phoenixville, PA's Ed Arnold once met Gentle Giant guitarist Gary Green ("he's great, laid back"). Now Ed wants to meet the group's leadsinger Derek Shulman, "he was an interesting vocalist; I'm gonna encourage him to play live again. He always seemed so intense... it might be intimidating."

Back in the late 1970s, Ed discovered the music of Gentle Giant, a progressive rock band whose Octopus and Three Friends are available as special digipacks on the band's label Alucard and distributed through EMI Records. These re-masters are from the original 1/4 inch tapes of these Seminal British Progressive Rock Recordings. As he did for Gentle Giant's earlier re-releases, Fred Kevorkian re-mastered these two additions to the available Gentle Giant catalog. Ecstatic music fans of many generations, most notably contemporaries of the UK-based group who recorded and toured from 1970 till 1980, have been excited about the new releases.

In the case of Ed Arnold, it was in homeroom, 1978, "I had a cool teacher who had a record player, and he always brought in interesting music for us."

This Saturday, October 1, at 2 PM, Ed will have taken the bus, train or maybe have driven in to "Philly." He hasn't quite decided how he's getting to the City of Brotherly Love, but he will be at F.Y.E. Music, 100 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, for Gentle Giant's first in-store in 30 years. Gary and Derek will be on hand to autograph THREE FRIENDS and OCTOPUS. The phone number for F,Y.E. is 215-496-8338.

The albums are available on at

One of the most renowned bands that came out of the British Progressive Rock Movement, Gentle Giant spent their decade together pushing musical boundaries and continually taking chances. Their music, while rooted in rock, had overtones of classical European composition, American jazz, British soul, medieval and even blues. They seamlessly integrated these disparate styles into the melting pot that epitomized the essence that was Gentle Giant.

Gentle Giant fans range from Ozzy Osbourne, Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Trey Anastasio of Phish, Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, Kerry Livgren of American progressive rockers Kansas to guitarist Peter Banks of Yes, and--of course--Ed Arnold!

One of the most renowned bands that came out of the British Progressive Rock
Movement, Gentle Giant spent their decade together pushing musical boundaries
and continually taking chances. Their music, while rooted in rock, had overtones of classical European composition, American jazz, British soul, medieval and even blues. They seamlessly integrated these disparate styles into the melting pot that epitomized the essence that was Gentle Giant.

Gentle Giant fans range from Ozzy Osbourne, Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Trey
Anastasio of Phish, Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater,
Avenged Sevenfold, Kerry Livgren of American progressive rockers Kansas
to guitarist Peter Banks of Yes.

Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater said, “Gentle Giant was one of my biggest musical
Influences in the days when I left Juilliard and my classical path of becoming a
concert pianist. My mom wouldn't like Gentle Giant because of that fact, but
hell, I am at least making a living playing music!”

Peter Banks called them “ahead of most of those groups at the time - they were
quite exceptional.”

Livgren said, “Gentle Giant was one of my favorite groups. Their albums Three
Friends and Octopus had a remarkable originality, good musicianship, and
philosophically interesting lyrics. I also had the pleasure of seeing them in
concert, and appreciated the energy of their performance.”

Three Friends, the group's first self-produced work (after two times in the
studio with Tony Visconti) and their first-to-be-released in the US, propelled
the group into one of the hardest edged progressive bands of their day. Of
Octopus, the All Music Guide's Dave Thompson says “…it's astonishing just how
little Octopus has dated…an album that has withstood the test of time a lot
better than anyone might have expected."

EMI TO RELEASE GENTLE GIANT's ALBUMS IN CD FORMAT

NOTE: THIS MEDIA RELEASE HAS BEEN UPDATED AS OF JAN. 27, 2010.

(IN A GLASS HOUSE, THE POWER & THE GLORY, FREE HAND out January 26, More discs, DVDs and gift packs to follow in 2010)

On January 26, 2010 Gentle Giant will be re-releasing three CDs: In A Glass House (originally released 1973), Free Hand (1975) and The Power & The Glory (1974) via their own Alucard label through EMI Music's Label Services unit and Caroline Distribution.

On February 9: Interview, Playing the Fool: the Official Live will be released.   On February 23, look for The Missing Piece and Giant for a Day in CD formats.   Later this year there will be vinyl releases of the catalog.   Look for a new DVD, GG at Winchester College, which is the first show that Gentle Giant ever performed; it includes songs never released on any commercial release.   Box sets and live recordings are also being planned.

All seven of the albums are remastered from the original 1/4 inch tapes through Hi-Resolution (24bit 96k) transfer that the band recorded at UK's Abbey Road Studios in the 1970s.   Band member Ray Shulman was in charge of the new remasters.

This progressive rock band, which was active from 1970 through 1980, was made up of multi-instrumentalists, and lived to expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular.   The group's dozen albums combine a range of musical styles-jazz, pop, classical, British soul, rock, blues, medieval, pop, blues, Gentle Giant's legacy has become influential to a range of artists from the arena rock, jam band, virtuoso players, chamber pop, jazz, and-of course-progressive rock genres.

FOR JUST THE DIGITAL RELEASES, the band chose favorite live versions of songs from each album and some obscure radio sessions. Two of the bonus tracks “Intro 74” and “Intro 76” were partially re-recorded, embellished and remixed by Kerry Minnear of the group.

Minnear, plus Gentle Giant bandmates Ray Shulman, Gary Green, John Weathers, and Derek Shulman are available for interviews.   Other promotion includes radio, print, Internet, and mobile phone outreach.
