Great Outdoors-Inspired Songs

CLIMB THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN by Gary Lucas (co-writer of Jeff Buckley’s hits MOJO PIN and GRACE, and Joan Osborne’s Grammy-nominated song SPIDER WEB). Gary’s soaring and motivational rock song with horns and a wailing chorus, “Climb the highest mountain so you can stand tall!”

Gary and his rock band, Gods and Monsters, will perform at the Iridium, NYC, on May 31. He’ll include some of his classic Chinese pop with long-time collaborator singer Feifei YangClassic folks from the NYC rock and punk scene (bassist Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers, Elliott Murphy, David Johansen), and drummer Billy Ficca (Television, Waitresses, Washington Squares), and saxophonist/analog studio owner Jason Candler) are in Gary’s band. Ernie, Billy and Jason do sessions.

Then look for a full show of Chinese Pop from Gary and Feifei, on July 25, at  The Loft at City Winery NYC
8pm.  That show will feature dreamy ’30s Shanghai Pop,

and new Mandarin versions of songs by Bob Dylan and other great artists.

TWINKLE LITTLE STAR by Miss Amy is one of the most pure-in-heart versions of the classic lullaby that you're ever going to hear!

TCHATCHAKES LATKES by Rachael Sage
a perfect song for the news this Hanukah (Dec. 12-20). She sings the ingredients in this festive ditty which sounds good late night/early morning.

FROM EVERY MOUNTAINSIDE by Dan Berggren is for the Fourth of July, and is the same melody of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Dan's version is about fighting for the environment and liberty to keep us strong.

From Every Mountainside

My country, ‘tis for thee
I’ll fight for liberty
To keep us strong.
When power is shared by you,
Not just a chosen few.
We know what we must do
To right the wrongs.

Don’t take for granted
Seeds that were planted
Centuries ago.
Seeds of democracy,
Nurtured with honesty,
Become our liberty
When we share the load.

My country, I love thee.
Long may thy flag fly free;
for you I stand.
But I don’t appreciate
The way some do generate
A national pride that’s based on hate
Of another land.

This world may never be
Completely trouble-free,
And yet we cling.
Let us who share this place
Do so with strength and grace.
We are one human race
Of thee I sing.

Gary Lucas & Jann Klose’s New Music Video FAIR WEATHER & 4 STARS in MOJO

Guitarist & Singer Available For Interviews On What MOJO Magazine Calls Their “Peculiar Potent Chemistry”

Urban Americana duo Gary Lucas & Jann Klose are celebrating the great weather with their new music video, “Fair Weather.”

Meteorologist Dan Skof, who sometimes raps as MC Cumulus on his weather forecasts on  Northwest Arkansas’ NBC affiliate KNWA, says he "digs" the song, “Love the chorus when the harmony kicks in! Nice play on words too. it really isn't about the weather, but a "fair weathered friend!" I love the feel of the video too, feels very much like New York (obviously since it was shot in New York).”

The “Fair Weather” video was created by DeAngela Napier, who has produced and directed other Gary & Jann videos. The video combines footage of the musicians’ hometown with favorite photos of them in concert. Watch “Fair Weather” at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDe9xLk-q3g.

“Fair Weather” appears on Gary & Jann’s album, STEREOPTICON (Cosmic Trigger/The Orchard). MOJO gives STEREOPTICON 4 STARS and states, “There is a peculiar potent chemistry at work here…Stylistically STEREOPTICON marries a roots blues approach with echoes of acoustic Zeppelin and flashes of refined pop songwriting craft.”

Gary Lucas & Jann Klose's STEREOPTICON In Digital Stores Now

Guitarist Gary Lucas and singer Jann Klose’s new album, STEREOPTICON is now out on Cosmic Trigger Records/The Orchard. This is a songwriter’s album, probably most at home with fans of AAA, indie, acoustic folk-pop/“urban Americana” music.

Also active songwriters, Gary and Jann collaborated on songs over the past three years. Their friend Dan Beck, who has written with Dion DiMucci, the Iron City Houserockers, Felix Cavaliere, joined them as lyricist on 6 songs. In September 2014 and June 2015, Jann and Gary recorded 10 songs at New York City’s premiere analog studio The Maid’s Room.

STEREOPTICON can be found on all digital stores, including iTunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/stereopticon/id1065240432 and on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018ZPIXGE.

DCRocks’ David Hintz writes about the album, "This is quite an exciting collaboration that makes a lot of sense. Lucas is more the veteran creative songsmith and Klose the younger, though well beyond rookie status, singer songwriter. They both understand the trippier original aspects to song structures with Lucas’ resume bordering on unbelievable as he has worked with Captain Beefheart, Peter Hammill, and Bryan Ferry.”

Music writer Arthur Levy posts of seeing Gary and Jann live at the Rockwood Music Hall Stage 3 in New York City, “Memorable night indeed, the Gary and Jann project exceeded all expectations, and what a great little music room.”

STEREOPTICON is produced by Jann, Gary, and Dan, who call themselves “Dr. Tre.” The album was engineered by Jack McKeever (Joan As Police Woman, Anna & Kate McGarrigle) and Jason Candler (Queen Esther), who also plays soprano sax on “Nobody’s Talking” and tenor sax on "Well of Loneliness." STEREOPTICON was mastered by Ben Kesler (Robert Randolph and the Family Band).

Gary’s co-written hits with Joan Osborne: “Spider Web,” and Jeff Buckley’s signature songs “Grace” and “Mojo Pin” from the singer’s double platinum album, GRACE. He’s worked extensively with Captain Beefheart. ROLLING STONE says Gary is, "One of the best and most original guitarists in America...a modern guitar miracle.” He just received the Premio Ciampi Lifetime Achievement Award in Italy, named for one of Italy's most famous songwriters. In 2014, Gary received the Ambassador's Award for Cultural Diplomacy from the US Consul General of Milan. His long-awaited GARY LUCAS’ FLEISCHEREI: MUSIC FROM MAX FLEISCHER CARTOONS is now available on Cuneiform Records. He is currently collaborating with Steve Kilbey (The Church), and Chris Shinn (new lead singer of Live), and was (this fall) Music Director of "State of Grace,” a multi-artist Australian tribute to Tim and Jeff Buckley.

Born in Germany and raised in Kenya, South Africa and the United States, Jann Klose is currently collaborating with Ann Hampton Callaway, Renaissance’s Annie Haslam, Hall & Oates’ John Oates and The Yardbirds’ Jim McCarty. In 2015 Jann and his music appeared in the short film THE BEAUTY OF DISASTER (Glimmer Girl, USA) and the award-winning Australian feature documentary A VENUE FOR THE END OF THE WORLD (BrinkVision, USA). His most recent album, MOSAIC won three 2014 Independent Music Awards and charted for several months on the AMA and Roots Rock charts.

Gary Lucas and Jann Klose Sing For Homeless Superstorm Sandy Survivors

Songwriting Duo Spotlights People Still Without Homes Due to October 2012 Weather Disaster

Guitarist Gary Lucas (Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart) and award-winning singer Jann Klose are adamant about bringing attention to our neighbors in need. With January 2016 plans to release STEREOPTICON, an album of song collaborations, the two continue to spread the word about their 2014 music video "Mary Magdalene.” Co-written with Dan Beck (who has written with Dion DiMucci and the Rascals’ Felix Cavaliere), “Mary Magdalene” brings attention to people in Long Island, Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and New Jersey still struggling to get their lives back to normal since Oct. 29, 2012's Superstorm Sandy.

Among the other indignities these disaster victims have faced, some people who didn’t have flood insurance were told by FEMA that they needed to return money.

These songwriters still hear stories of people desperately wishing Long Beach had its hospital back. “An urgent care center is not good enough for the different health emergencies any of us would have on a given night,” says resident and musician, bassist Joanne “J-Bird” Phillips. “I needed to go to the emergency room but the hospital has been boarded up since Superstorm Sandy. I had an eye emergency and went to the Urgent Care Center that's on the grounds of the former hospital. They had no ophthalmologist and a very limited pharmacy that didn’t have the medication I needed. I had to drive almost a half hour to a 24 hour pharmacy, with my eye problems, while waiting 3 hours to be seen by a doctor who didn't even physically examine my affected eye!”

Gary Lucas says, “Until everybody is back in their homes and things are back to normal, we are getting the word out in support of everyone affected by Superstorm Sandy.”

Dan, Gary and Jann created the video for “Mary Magdalene” with help of Long Beach, NY travel agent Debra Michaels who cleared locations with colleagues in Island Park within a half hour of hearing about the video. They all said, "We want to get the message out that we're having a rough time getting Island Park back to normal."

Recalling tragic songs like Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” Christy Moore’s “Back Home in Derry, Peter Adamson's "The Titanic,” "Mary Magdalene" is about living through Superstorm Sandy. Jann, Gary and Dan, plus a three-person production crew: Z3Rro The Comet, and Ashley Christopher (recent graduates from Five Towns' College) and EDM DJ James Messina filmed "Mary Magdalene" throughout Island Park. They showcased footage of condemned homes, the local firehouse and a favorite pub, The Local Ale House. In addition to cinematography in Island Park, the video uses footage of Breezy Point supplied by Getty Images Editorial Footage/Getty Images. Jann and Gary's songwriting style is based in the Roots Music Genre. In actuality both artists are eclectic musicians, who tour throughout the world on their own.

Through his career, Gary Lucas worked extensively with both Jeff Buckley and Captain Beefheart. He is a solo artist and band leader with 27 albums of his own to his credit.  He just toured Australia as the music director of A STATE OF GRACE, the music of Jeff & Tim Buckley; Martha Wainwright shared the stage with Gary. He shared a GRAMMY nomination with Joan Osborne for co-writing the song “Spider Web.” ROLLING STONE says Gary is, "One of the best and most original guitarists in America...a modern guitar miracle." His long-awaited Fleischerei album (Music from Betty Boop) will be released on Cuneiform, end of January.

Jann Klose recently finished touring South Africa where he grew up as a child; he sang with South Africa's National Symphony Orchestra’s conductor Richard Cock and talented orchestra students from South Africa and Nambia. He is a multiple Independent Music Award (IMA) winner. In December, the award-winning Australian documentary VENUE FOR THE END OF THE WORLD, that Jann appears in alongside of Dick Cavett and Ian Anderson, will be out on Brink Vision.

Gary and Jann both worked on the movie GREETINGS FROM TIM BUCKLEY (Tribeca Films/Focus World/Universal). Jann is the singing voice of Tim Buckley, while Gary consulted and played guitar. Tony Award winner Frank Wood plays Gary in the film.

Mandala's MIDNIGHT TWILIGHT: 18 Years in the Making

MANDALA, The Band

Rhys Marsh — voice, guitar, mellotron, sitar, rhodes, rebab, pedal steel

Francis Booth — bass guitar
Will Spurling — drums, percussion, tablas

with:
Anna Giddey — violin
Natalie Rozario — cello
Peter Keserue — harmonium

Coming out May 5 is Mandala’s album, MIDNIGHT TWILIGHT on Norway’s Autumnsongs Records (distributed by MVD in North America).

Mandala's debut album, MIDNIGHT TWILIGHT, is an exhilarating combination of Western and Eastern folk music, mixed with heavier forms of progressive rock, all wrapped in an early-‘70s glow.

Mandala was formed in London in 1997, by Rhys Marsh (voice, guitar), Francis Booth (bass) and Will Spurling (drums). Their plan was to create music that represented all things analog, specifically their love of valves, vinyl and VU meters. They wore flares and large-collared shirts with pride, quickly becoming one of the most talked about bands in the college, performing regularly in the weekly foyer, on TV shows and in end of year productions.

By 2005, they had a new sound that encompassed violin and cello, which they presented at concerts across the UK and North America. They recorded and self-released two EPs — one showcasing their ability to rock out, albeit this time with a string section, and the other showcasing their acoustic material. The sound was penned by The Guardian newspaper as “Folk Noir.” At this time also, Mandala’s music was attracting the attention of fans in Scandinavia through MySpace.

The group played hundreds of concerts, though never recorded a full album. In 2006, they decided to call it a day. The band members ended up pursuing other musical projects, Rhys Marsh even moving to Norway to begin a successful musical career there. They remained friends — in fact, in the years between 2006 and 2012, they had grown even closer as friends.

In 2012, the ideas for getting back together were sparked, and in 2014 the band flew to Norway — heading to Autumnsongs Recording Studio in Trondheim. For 10 days they were accommodated in the Autumnsongs building — a solid concrete bunker, with no windows. The time of day quickly became irrelevant, as they set up in the studio to record in the truest way they could: live, together in the same room, surrounded by room mics and lava lamps, allowing the instruments to bleed over each others' tracks. They only time they ventured outside was for dinner, which always ended up being a barbecue, on the mountain next to the studio, during the hours of the MIDNIGHT TWILIGHT.

From the first playback, they were blown away by the sounds that came through the monitors. They were even tighter as a band than they had been years before. Suddenly, it felt as though the three of them had grown so much as people and musicians that they were able to fully express the songs as they should be heard.

MIDNIGHT TWILIGHT has been 18 years in the making. We hope you agree that it's been worth the wait.

Entertainment Tonight Online's Artist You Should Know Jann Klose

Jann Klose talks with ETOnline's Denny Directo about his work as a featured singer and guitarist in the movie, GREETINGS FROM TIM BUCKLEY at ETOnline at http://www.etonline.com/music/131526_Artist_You_Should_Know_Jann_Klose/index.html Jann recorded Tim's "Once I Was," "Pleasant Street," and "Song For Janie" for the movie. Also covered is Jann's eclectic iPod and his guilty pleasure-- nude beaches!

In ET's Archive Library, Jann performs "Still" from his album, MOSAIC, due June 2013. The album can easily be called a sonic, lyrical and emotional mosaic from an artist, who is known as one with multi-cultural roots and an equally widely-faceted career and a voice that Public Radio’s Barb Heller says, “could sing the phonebook.”

GREETINGS FROM TIM BUCKLEY director Dan Algrant realized that when he hired Jann as a featured vocalist and guitarist in the movie that stars Penn Badgley and Imogen Poots, and will be released April 16th, 2013 by Tribeca Film / Focus World.

Jann's album MOSAIC follows the indie success of REVERIE (2008) and SACRIFICE EP (2010) and the music video for DOING TIME. Produced by Grammy winner James Frazee (Esperanza Spalding, Blondie, My Morning Jacket) and David Bendeth (Paramore, Bruce Hornsby, Elvis Presley) MOSAIC was recorded between Fall 2011 and Winter of 2012/13. Double GRAMMY-winner Warren Russell-Smith, mastered MOSAIC.

MOSAIC’s songs tackle personal and topical subjects and bring together a variety of instruments, musical and lyrical styles from street influences of reggae and punk to calypso, to classic rock, and the folk and Afro-beat that has addicted fans of all ages to Jann’s music. Songs include Jann’s originals, “Still,” “Make It Better,” “Four Leaf Clover,” “On and On,” “Falling Tears,” and the playful “Beautiful One” that features Rounder Records’  Carrie Newcomer. The album ends with a stunning a cappella cover of Tim Buckley’s “Song To The Siren.”  Other featured guests include guitarists Florian Opahle (Ian Anderson, Greg Lake) David Bendeth, flautist Tia Roper and oboist Megan Marolf  (Phillip Glass, Roger Waters).

Critics have placed him in the chamber pop as well as the singer-songwriter genres, and Jann welcomes their varied reflections, “There are no limits when it comes to making music.  I’m defined by who I am and what I do, not how some marketing executive pigeonholes me.  It’s melodic, lyrical, and rhythmic music.  Music is about what the listener hears.”

Born in Germany, raised in Kenya, South Africa, and Hamburg, Jann came to the States as an exchange student in Cleveland, and performed in a wide range of musical projects including the Cleveland Opera Chorus, touring productions of Broadway shows (JEKYLL & HYDE, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR) as well as portraying The Pinball Wizard in THE WHO’S TOMMY before he started his band.

Jann’s music is heard on the GRAMMY-nominated HEALTHY FOOD FOR THOUGHT, on MTV CRIBS, the movie “Dead Broke” (Warner Bros.) featuring Paul Sorvino. He maintains a steady touring schedule of about 75-100 shows a year in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
