The Rembrandts' album

The Rembrandts are Phil Solem and Danny Wilde, and Fuel 2000 is releasing their greatest hits album, CHOICE PICKS on December 27, 2005 which means I'll be working it in 2006.  The album is very good pop music, and the theme from "Friends" is on it.  That song is a bit different than the more lucid pieces on the rest of the album.  They have a Beatles/Everly Brothers influence, one of the songs "That's Just the Way It Is, Baby" reminds me of a hit song that the Alan Parsons Project could have written.  "Drowning In Your Tears" could have been a pop hit for Ian Lloyd and Stories, if you can remember their album, ABOUT US.

Phil Solem is one of my favorite, undersung guitar heroes.  Back in 1980 he was in a band called Great Buildings, and though it didn't chart, I did become aware of a guitarist who seemed to understand how to put country and surf sounds together in a pop base.  A lot of folks will know Danny Wilde, who has had at least three solo albums.

I haven't yet talked with the guys, but should by the time the campaign gets into swing in the new year.  Please let me know if you're interested in the album.

Katy Moffatt's shows and an album

Katy Moffatt fits in the Americana or country category.  It's fair to compare this red-headed acoustic guitar player and songwriter to Bonnie Raitt, except Katy is acoustic.  She has blues, yodels, and is into history and story telling.  She is a 20 plus year veteran of the industry.  Attention: classic rock buffs, while working as a solo artist, she's also been a featured singer with Lynn Anderson, Hoyt Axton and Tanya Tucker, plus she's either been produced by or collaborated with Dave Alvin, Rosie Flores, and Tom Russell.  She's working with Wendy Waldman on a project of historical songs.

I'm name-dropping because I want you to give her album, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL a listen.  It was released in October 2005, but because it's a sweet feeling album, and Katy is booking shows, there are even more reasons to listen to it and write about it.

introduction to Sugar

Sugar is the Akron, Ohio group of "chicks who rock."  They're glam/power pop/fourth generation punk/with British invasion influences.  The band's leader is guitarist Rose Kuhel.  The album, 11 AFTER, was produced by former Warrant songwriter Jani Lane.  You can be their myspace friends at www.myspace.com/sugarband.  They told me that right now they're the most viewed Ohio band on myspace.  I don't know if that's true, but they're into doing shows with other MidWest myspace bands, so if you're in a MidWest band, e-mail them at their site.

One of the things I like about this group is how much the singer has captured the personality of the group's leader.  To me this has happened only a couple of times in music history with AC/DC and Cheap Trick.  So I really believe Sugar can end up to be a major group, they want to.  Right now they're playing pubs.....

December 30    House of Blues, Cleveland, OH   (a myspace party)
January 6 & 7 The Corner Pub, Circleville, OH
January 21  The Carriage House, Louisville (near Akron), OH
February 3     Top Cats in Cincinnati,  OH w/Drug Store Valentine
March 18    TNT  Detroit, MI

Joe Deninzon news

Wild violinist Joe Deninzon has lots of stuff in the works for 2006.

Upcoming shows of his band Stratospheerius include:

January 14th,  The Conduit
Trenton, NJ
opening for reggae sensation, "Crucial"

January 19th,
Kenny's Castaways, New York, NY

February 24,

Joe's playing the NAMM Festival, solo, in Anaheim on January 21 at the John Lennon Imagine Songwriting Contest table.  Joe is one of the top three finalists in the jazz songwriting competition for the song "Sun Goes Down" which he wrote with John LaBarbera.  "Sun Goes Down" is also the theme song of an upcoming film, WHAT'S UP SCARLET?

Joe and bandmates--Luciana Padmore (drums), Bob Bowen (bass), and Mack Price (guitar) are working on their next CD, their third studio effort and their fourth album.  Joe says, "The disc will have no keyboards, a harder, guitar-driven record with more vocal songs."  Stratospheerius are playing songs from the album at their shows.

Also, Greg Russo (author of the Jethro Tull book, FLYING COLORS) put together a few studio projects.  One is the Tornadoes' NOW AND THEN, and the other is Greg's music in an album called NEONFIRE, and Joe is on the disc, along with Candy Zappa (Frank's sister) and Napoleon Murphy Brock (Zappa's mid-'70s vocalist).  Three guys from the well-known Zappa tribute band Project/Object play guitar and drums.  Greg played keyboards and his brother Jeff played bass.   Joe Deninzon plays acoustic and electric violin on the track "Change In The Weather," which is sung by Napoleon Murphy Brock.

If you want to write about the albums, contact Greg at (973) 403-1633 or GRusso2787@aol.com.

HEYOKA magazine did a profile on Joe for their current DJANGO REINHARDT issue, and it can be read at http://www.heyokamagazine.com/HEYOKA-2-Joe-Deninzon.htm

Robin Renee's tourdates, writing work.

My mantra-pop artist, Robin Renee and I have articles in the 2006 issue of SONGWRITERS MARKET.  My piece focuses on instrumentalists--Steve Horowitz (SUPERSIZE ME), John Corigliano (THE RED VIOLIN), Carl Strommen (arranger and composer extraordinaire) and my artist Joe Deninzon.

Robin is super-psyched 'cause her piece focuses on Richie Havens, one of the artists she's been compared to through the years.

I met Robin from the editor, Ian Bessler, at SONGWRITERS MARKET, because we both take spiritual approaches to our art.  Robin is into yoga, Krishna, and has shows that are perfect for yoga schools and other gigs are perfect for the crowds who like Richie Havens.

Jethro Tull: Aqualung, Jonathan Noyce & Doane Perry notes

Jethro Tull are working on dates in Asia and Europe the first half of 2006.  Here in the States, I've got a few goals with the band.  One is that the new version of AQUALUNG will finally be available in the States in record stores for everyone in late February, so let me know if you're interested.

This album was recorded at XM Radio in November 2004, and given away to fans at Tull concerts this past fall as part of the price of the ticket.  That price, then, went to help homeless hurricane Katrina victims via the Red Cross.

In the upcoming campaign for the album, Ian Anderson wants folks to know that AQUALUNG has quite a bit of electric and acoustic range.  It's more than just that rock-edged song, "Aqualung."

I also want the media to take note of Tull's rhythm section.  Drummer Doane Perry is celebrating his 21st year in the group, and originally joined the band after working with Pat Benatar. He still does sessions, and for this past tour, he did a lion's share of the interviews, and reporters really enjoyed chatting with him.  He's very well-read, loves to write, and is a very kind person.

Bassist Jonathan Noyce told me he's written a number of columns for the British publication, BASS GUITAR MAGAZINE and about jamming with Gary Moore and other former members of Thin Lizzy.  He's goign to the studio with Gary Moore's next album, which will be leaning towards the Stax soul sound.  "As a direct result of working with Gary, in August I was asked to join the former members of Thin Lizzy for a one off concert at The Point in Dublin, Ireland, to commemorate the memory and the birthday of the late bassist and lead singer Phil Lynott. The show was recorded for future DVD release. I was joined on stage by Gary Moore, who took Phil's vocal duties, drummer Bryan Downey, guitarists Scott Gorham, Bryan Robertson and Eric Bell."   OKAY, SO JONATHAN PLAYED PHIL LYNOTT'S PARTS LIVE.

He also recorded a CD with a very talented young Irish singer songwriter called Leanne Harte for a future release, and someday he hopes his own solo project will see the light of day.

So, in addition to the usual Ian Anderson interviews, I want to make both Jonathan and Doane available to the media this year.  Both are worth your while.

****
Tim Morse is not one of my artists, but was a journalist of mine for several years, and he's pretty darn proud of his first album, TRANSFORMATION which is progressive rock.  Bill Bruford said, "sounds great...unbelievable proficient and will find considerable favour in the Prog community."  David Sancious wrote, "Transformation recalls the spirit of progressive rock when genres of music were blended fearlessly and the listener was transported to places that expanded the imagination. If you like original compositions full of energy and the unexpected, you are sure to enjoy it."  So contact Tim Morse directly at Starkl9@aol.com.

Boca Raton News music reporter Skip Shefield rescued a green sea turtle this summer, and gave it to a turtle hospital down there.  The animal is going to be big someday, and it lost sight in her left eye.  Although the hospital original named the animal "Skip," they changed it to Star-Chaser, and ultimately released it to sea.  If anyone wants some j-pegs of the animal, please e-mail me.  Plus I can connect you with Skip Sheffield, if you're interested in interviewing him on the animal-human connection.

And finally, lots of good wishes to Curt Mason at KKFI (www.kkfi.org), he is currently doing Tuesday overnights there, and hopes to go full time again after he recovers from a heart attack that happened a few weeks ago.  Curt just wants to be in touch with folks, and I think that might help him in his recovery. So if you're up late and can get streaming radio online, please check him out and send him a note at therockerradioshow@hotmail.com.

Jethro Tull-October & November 2005 tourdates

The lineup of Jethro Tull features singer/flutist/multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson, guitarist Martin Barre, drummer Doane Perry, keyboardist Andrew Giddings and bassist Jonathan Noyce.  This is the most consistent lineup the group has had in its entire history.  Perry joined around 1980, Giddings about 1990, and Noyce in the mid-’90s after working with Ian on his solo project DIVINITIES.

And true to consistency, Tull are touring again in the states this fall. This tour will include two days at Carnegie Hall, and the band hasn’t played that illustrious venue since the 1970s.  Folks who buy tickets will also receive a free copy of AQUALUNG, an album that features some overlooked acoustic Tull songs.

I’m setting interviews up with Ian and Martin for nationals and monthlies in August, and we’ll get to regular tour press in September.  I hope to get a lot of folks talking with Martin this tour, because it’s my tenth anniversary working with him.

leads for friends & their art-Jon Novello, Elisa Peimer, Thor w/Bruce Duff & Frank Meyer

John Novello, famous keyboardist from Niacin wrote that he’s receiving great support from people about his late wife, Gloria, who passed on in 2000 from breast cancer.  He wrote a book, THE SONG THAT NEVER ENDED and released her music on a cd, Tightrope.

Visit John at http://www.keysnovello.com.

*********
Elisa Peimer has also gone through spiritual growth in her music-making. A few years ago I had her as a guest on my radio show on WDFH, and recently ran into her at a Just Plain Folks show in New York City.  With just guitar and voice, she plays as a talented one-woman band with dynamics, sensitivity, and a musicality you’d expect from classic rockers.

She has a show July 13 at Bar 169 in New York City with a full band, and then she goes solo for The Songwriter’s Beat Festival at Cornelia Street Cafe in Manhattan on July 21 to help benefit children and teens who lost parents on September 11.

Separate from Elisa’s gigs is her singing of the national anthem on JULY 9, for MetroStars soccer in Giants Stadium.

Contact Elisa at her website, http://www.elisapeimer.com.

******
And congratulations to two west coast journalists/jack of all trades--Frank Meyer and Screaming Bruce Duff who found themselves gigs with Thor, a Canadian musician.  If you were around back in the ‘80s, you’ll remember Jon Mikl Thor was a rocker and a bodybuilder with an album called KEEP THE DOGS AWAY.

Well he has reinvented himself and come out with a dynamic and dramatic biker rock album, THOR AGAINST THE WORLD.  And Bruce & Frank are in his band.  They’re touring with him.  I really like the album and can hear influences of classic rock, the Rolling Stones, New York Dolls, and even Manowar.  Their publicist is Ilka Pardenas, give her a “shaute” as they pronounce the word “shout” in --Canada, eh.  flypr@flypr.net.

Tull T-shirts for Tsunami relief

Jean is the gent, who is modeling the "Roots to Branches" Jethro Tull T-shirt.  He's from Montreal and loves cooking Indian food.
Our friend Joy Roy is the handsome man adorning the white Tull for Tsunami shirt, Joy Roy is a poet, gardener, reader.  He loves to listen to '60s psychedelia and devotional music.  By day, Joy Roy makes a living in corporate communications.

Special note for Jethro Tull fans and fundraising for Tsunami victims, from Light Ice, a Kolkata-based designer house in India.  Note: Through the years Ian Anderson has visited and played in countries affected by late December’s Tsunami, and hopes to build up tourism in those countries.

Light Ice, a Kolkata based designer house has launched T-shirts of the legendary British band Jethro Tull, on 14th April at Swabhumi, Kolkata.  The T-shirts come under the banner, “Tull for Tsunami Victims” and the net receipt from the sales will be donated to the Tsunami Disaster Relief Funds in India.

The proposal for this project was initiated by Light Ice after they had asked Jethro Tull Management about the idea of selling Tull t-shirts to raise money in the wake of the disaster. Designs were done based on the classic Tull leitmotif of “the one-legged flute player” mixing the India Experience of the Tull music embedded in folk history, mysticism and albeit the Lord Krishna Consciousness. The final nod and approval came from Ian Anderson himself; singer, songwriter, composer, flautist and the charismatic frontman of Jethro Tull, a figured much revered in the musical circuit in India by classical musicians and fans alike.

According to Light Ice Management, free sachets of sunflower seeds will be given with T-shirts: “this will be a nice gesture and will imply some simple activity like planting seeds, a way of getting into the inner garden of our mind and also finding a little bit more about the process of creation at work in nature every second of our lives. The replenishment is always there and will never cease. Spring is the right season to initiate
gardening/agricultural activities. Also the iconic name, Jethro Tull is derived from a 17th century British agriculturist/horticulturist who invented the seed-drill instrument”.

T-shirts are priced at Rs 300/- (20 U.S. DOLLARS) and comes packed in exclusive hand-made batik bags with an excerpt from “Songs from the Wood” lyrics adorning the back side.

For Americans, shirts will be distributed from the Bronx, but people are to send checks to  Joy Roy Choudhury:
Kindly note that tees are in sizes of M/L

and XL with 2 designs, 1. Tull Petal with

excerpt from Thick As A Brick
2. Songs

              from the Wood.

              T-shirt cols are black & beige ( 100%

cotton, mercerised interlock with 240 gsm )

Grand Funk's in SAHARA, plus tour dates!!!

Grand Funk Railroad’s WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND featured in Penelope Cruz/Matthew McConaughey blockbuster film, SAHARA

Grand Funk Railroad is pleased that their popular hit song "We're An American Band" is featured in the new Paramount Pictures movie, SAHARA, the number one movie at the box office for its opening weekend of  April 8.  Sahara is the swashbuckly saga of Dirk Pitt, the star of four decades worth of books by author Clive Cussler.

"This is an exciting movie," says "We're An American Band" writer and leadsinger, Don Brewer, drummer for the band Grand Funk Railroad.  "I've long been a fan of Clive Cussler. To have my song in a movie with Dirk Pitt is a major rush."

"We're An American Band" has been heard in the soundtrack of other recent films, including Cuba Gooding's RADIO and Disney's THE COUNTRY BEARS.

SAHARA features Matthew McConaughy and Penelope Cruz, and is an adventurous movie, featuring treasure hunts in Africa, intrigue and--of course--a man and woman falling in love at the end.

Grand Funk Railroad is playing dates throughout the United States this spring and summer, and will include the movie's song at each of them.

Anne's activities

Joe Deninzon will also be joining my panel of artists who’ve created their own career opportunities on May 15 at 2 PM at the Global Entertainment Network Summit (www.globalentertainmentnetwork.com) at the Laugh factory in New York City.  The other artists include comedienne/author/world’s fastest talking woman Fran Capo, club and studio owner/singer/songwriter/guitarist Billy Morris, independent TV and film producer Frank Mosca of Harrington Talents in the Bronx to talk about ways we can use the media to further our careers.  I’m also looking for a reporter/journalist that works in more than one medium to join the panel, so if you have suggestions please call me or email.

One of the reasons I’m doing workshops and panels is to promote my book, USING YOUR ART & THE MEDIA TO COMFORT PEOPLE. Another cool thing I’m doing in conjunction with the book is sponsoring the word “comfort” at the website ETYMOLOGY ONLINE.  http://www.etymonline.com/ is one of my all-time favorite websites as it shows word origins.  Independent acts need clever ideas to help create media attention, and it costs about 10 dollars for six months to sponsor a word.  Check out the site and see if sponsoring a word is something you can try to help hype one of your projects.

By the way, “Comfort” is from Latin roots including the word “fortis” which is “strong.”  So “comfort” means “to help, to strengthen.”

Mountain tour

Mountain’s Leslie West recaptured childhood memories with his rockin’ friends Anthrax’ Scott Ian and Twisted Sister’s J.J. French and Dee Snider.  They filmed MATZO AND METAL: A VERY CLASSIC SEDER which is broadcasting this Sunday on VH1 CLASSICS at 7 PM east coast time and 4 west coast.

This is a chance to get some great insight on Jewish culture and how music enriches the Passover story.

All foods served will be Kosher, of course, courtesy of the special's sponsor Manischewitz.

And God certainly has been blessing Leslie and Mountain (made up of drummer Corky Laing and bassist Richie Scarlet) this season, because they have a wealth of tourdates.....Note  that the astericked* ones have Mountain opening for Deep Purple!

MOONLIGHT INTERIOR, April 14-17, NYC The music of Jann Klose, choreography of Yo-el Cassell!!

MOONLIGHT INTERIOR
The choreography of Yo-el Cassell, Music of Jann Klose, April 14-17 at the Sande Shurin Black Box Theater

YC Movement Theatre shatters the alienation of our modern times with a collaborative piece, MOONLIGHT INTERIOR.  Moving to the choreography of Yo-el Cassell and the music of Jann Klose, the performers seek to reveal the extraordinary within each of us. The evening length production will take place at the Sande Shurin Black Box Theater, 311 West 43rd Street, 6th floor in New York City, April 14-17. The Sande Shurin Theater is located between 8th and 9th Avenues, and near the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 7, 9 and S subway stops.   Show times are: 8 pm (2 pm Matinees on Saturday and Sunday), admission is $20 ($15 w/student ID), with the opening night performance as a benefit for the YC Movement Theatre company for $50. The public can call 212-726-8060 for more information.

The show is directed and choreographed by Yo-el Cassell with a live musical score written and performed by collaborator, Jann Klose and his band. Cassell says, “There are many inspirations in this work, especially the artwork of Edward Hopper, whose paintings, I feel, are inspiration for the ‘interior’ in all of us—our own inner beauty.”

Dancer/choreographer/mime/actor Yo-el Cassell credits include The Virginia Opera, The Pearl Lang Dance Theater, Spencer/Colton, The American Mime Theater, PBS’s SHINING TIME STATION, Miramax’ CULTIVATING STILLNESS, a residency at Skidmore College and researching period movement for the movie CHICAGO and its director Rob Marshall. THE BOSTON PHOENIX cites Cassell as a “choreographer with great invention and imagination with a fluid command of the craft of movement ... his work strikes an emotional punch.”

Originally from Germany, singer/songwriter/actor Jann Klose is equally eclectic.   CLEVELAND MAGAZINE says his current EP, BLACK BOX is “a startlingly fresh blend of pop, blues, rock and jazz that provides the perfect showcase for Klose’s powerful, emotive voice.”  Klose has performed throughout the world, he has acted and sung in the Broadway touring company of JECKYLL AND HYDE, TOMMY at NJPAC,  and The JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR European tour.   He’s developed a following for his original music, opening for Steve Forbert, Tish Hinojosa, Jorma Kaukonen (of Jefferson Airplane) and performing with the legendary Les Paul.

Cassell hopes to inspire people with this presentation, “Jann and I invite the audience into an intimate and enthralling environment of live music, dance and the theater of one's own imagination."

MOUNTAIN ERUPTING FAR, WIDE AND LOUD WITH CURRENT RELEASES AND TOURS

****Leslie West featured guitarist on Ozzy Osbourne hit “Mississippi Queen “ and the band’s album ERUPTION still selling****

Guitarist Leslie West, drummer Corky Laing and bassist Richie Scarlet are proving rock lives with active tour dates and successful recordings.  The band, which has been celebrating their 35th Anniversary, are getting exciting presents  as Active Rock and Rock radio is making the Ozzy Osbourne cover of their 1970 hit “Mississippi Queen” the number one most added track.  For the second week in a row, “Mississippi Queen” is still the most added track and is also number #1 in increased airplay . Here's how the charts are shaping up after three weeks:

Canadian Rock National Airplay : Week 3: #25

Artists I like, but am not working with

Here are some artists that I recommend, but am not publicizing:

Dina Finai, who is one of the Trans Siberian Orchestra singers.  Her new album has reflective songs including a topically timely remake of Supertramp’s “The Logical Song.”  Here are all Dina’s contacts: 917-847-4772 DINAFANAI@NYC.RR.COM.

Streamers--c/o Ida Langsam.  This is a British-invasion influenced band whose leader, Sean Yoxovic, came from Serbia.  He is fighting to get rid of landmines.  Contact Ida at islpr@aol.com.

Jay Tausig has a progressive rock group called DARCANA.  He’s now based near Reno, NV, but he used to live in the Bronx, and he helped me back in 1995 when I was first working with a great progressive rock group called Ten Ton Tide.  Jay’s website is www.darcana.com, and his email is lemuria66@jps.net

I did a bio for a pop-rock band from Long Island.  They called the Blues Scene.  They’re influenced by Oasis, the Beach Boys, Beatles.  They’re young and are always challenging themselves in their genres.  Give a call to manager Will Norton at 631-234-1720.

The Kelly Project, who won the best band for INSIDE CONNECTION’S contest last year, are soulful rock  & roll. Contact Benny Arocha at 631-987-9701 to get their kit.  I think if you like Tower of Power, you will like the Kelly Project.

I am still working Vanilla Fudge, but not TNA......   Pat Travers and Carmine Appice are in the studio
working on their second CD of TNA, this time for Cleopatra Records.  Stay in touch with your Cleopatra rep on that project

Performing on the disc are two master bassists--Tony Franklin (Blue Murder, the Firm, Whitesnake) and Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot, Alice Cooper).

The album has new versions of Carmine's and Pat's
classic songs:
**Pat's "Snorting Whiskey," the original is now in
the Academy Award-nominated film, "Sideways."
**Carmine's "Superstition" from Beck, Bogert Appice's GOLD album. Like the original "Superstition," this version features Carmine's longtime buddy Tim Bogert on vocals.

Also scheduled to appear on the album are Toto's Bobby Kimball and Steve Lukather.

The TRAVERS-APPICE LIVE DVD is being released around
April-May on Escapi Music in Sweden.  (I’m not working that project, either.) It features a live show and interviews.  It was recorded September 4, and includes
another great bassist T.M. Stevens.

Look for a wild interview by summer with Carmine and extreme radio hostess Leslie Gold in TALKERS magazine.
