Jann Klose’s SURRENDER

Pop-Singer Songwriter’s 7th Album Self-Discovery Set to Infectious Stylings

Jann Klose’s “Surrender,” is the seventh studio album of this pop-singer-songwriter.  It’s a 12-track collection of pure pop music, arguably his most considered and commanding work yet.

“There’s a cohesive idea of the record, ‘Surrender,’” Jann says. “It’s a journey of overcoming and going through the good, the bad, the ugly, and coming out on the other side still wanting to experience new things.”

Musically, most of the album’s songs—“Surrender,” “Sugar My,” “Flesh and Blood,” “Even If It Takes A Lifetime”—are connecting with fans of Power Pop, Yacht Rock and Chamber Pop sensibilities. “Do You Want to Be Lonely” flirts with autotune and electronic music production. There’s a live singalong on “Here in My Heart” that Jann worked on with the 15-member Choir at PS 171-New York City and their teacher, Greg Durant.

“Surrender” features three unique ballads: “All the Way Down,” “Stay The Same,” and three different mixes of “Love You the Most” that feature Jann duetting with EDM Chart-Topper Alicia Madison. The song, which charted in South Africa and North America, was recorded for the movie soundtrack of “Married Young” now available on Amazon Prime. Jann and Alicia sang a Spanish version ("Te Amaré Más"), which found its way on radio in Brazil. The album also includes an acoustic mix.

Jann and Alicia wrote “Love You the Most” at a BMI Songwriting camp in South Africa in 2017, marking the beginning of creating the “Surrender” album, and the completion of Jann’s previous album, “In Tandem,” which features collaborations with a number of songwriters including coaches from South Africa’s “The Voice.” “In Tandem” was released in 2018 on Gallo Record Co/Sheer Sound. Soon after, Jann signed with Big Management in the United States.

As “Love You The Most” charted, the pandemic hit, “but we kept going, despite it all.” While the video blew up on YouTube, Jann’s manager Gary Salzman passed from Covid related illness in 2020.

Jann found support from collaborators, “My co-writer for more than half the album, Alex Forbes (Taylor Dayne’s "Don't Rush Me”) and I got together bi-weekly at her apartment.

Manhattan and poured our souls into the songs during the strangest of times. Producer Marcus Dembinski and I worked in person at our home studios in Manhattan and Queens, then started adding live instruments at Studio G Brooklyn with engineer Cyril Putzer. A lot of recording was done remotely. In Nashville, Max Sternlicht played all the great bass lines you hear on most of the record, Dimitris Menexopoulos recorded his Cretan Lyra in Greece for ‘Stay the Same,’ and Ben Kesler mastered the album in St. Louis, MO!”

The next single “Pilot Light,” highlighted “our collective vulnerability while celebrating our resilience to overcome life's worst.” "Sugar My," a chamber pop masterpiece about confusion in our times, made it into the Top 40 in the US and became a Hot Hit on Jacaranda FM in South Africa. Videos for “Sugar My,” “Love You the Most,” and the thoughtful “Flesh and Blood” have surpassed 3 million views on YouTube alone.

Songs on “Surrender” are finding airplay on a variety of formats from AAA stations like WFUV, a variety of Yacht Rock radio shows including Asheville.fm (103.3) and PacificCoast.fm, regional Top 40, Little Steven’s Underground Garage channel on Sirius XM….

With a tour this spring in South Africa, plus dates being scheduled regularly in North America, South America, Asia, and Europe—especially his native Germany-- Jann’s continues to write and sing with his band, "Each song, each album is, if nothing else, an offering. This is what I do, this is what I love.”

Award-Winning Singer Songwriter Jann Klose Breaks Top 40 with Hit Song "Sugar My"

“Up is down, day is night — not what it seems! Like Alice in Wonderland, stuck in-between” sings Jann Klose on the chorus of “Sugar My,” from his upcoming 7th studio album, “Surrender.”

One of two new singles released by indie pop artist Jann Klose has broken in to the Mediabase Top 40 activator chart, landing at #39 this week. The song, a commentary on the sometimes baffling and inexplicable state of the world today, is a cinematic pop gem co-written with hit songwriter Alex Forbes (Chic/Nile Rodgers, Taylor Dayne).

Jann recalls the writing session, “We wanted to create a feel of an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ vibe where there is a palatable sense of confusion and one is not sure what’s real and what’s not. We wrote it at the onset of the pandemic, so it was a strong reflection on how we were feeling ourselves!”

Released by Honey Rose Records, the song and music video for “Sugar My” are gaining momentum and airplay in the U.S. and South Africa. Filmed in Milford, CT, the high energy music video recently passed 120,000 views on YouTube. Jann partnered with director Alex Vishno and choreographer Eileen "EJ" Jaworowicz. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/miUgtAhOCMU

Jann was raised in Kenya, South Africa, Germany and the United States. He is an ambassador for Desmond Tutu's TutuDesk campaign and Brick by Brick Uganda. He is the singing voice of Tim Buckley in the movie "Greetings from Tim Buckley" (Universal). His songs have been heard on the Grammy® nominated "Healthy Food For Thought" compilation, charted in the Billboard Top 10 compilation "Action Moves People United," as well as MTV Cribs and movies "Dead Broke" (Warner Bros.) featuring Paul Sorvino and “One Little Finger” alongside Quincy Jones, Siedah Garrett and Julian Lennon.

Jann has performed as an actor and singer in touring companies of Broadway musicals, including "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Jekyll and Hyde," and "The Who's Tommy" as well as made for TV movies, voice overs and commercials. He has won 4 Independent Music Awards (IMAs). His podcast, Making Sound with Jann Klose has featured industry legends like Renaissance’s Annie Haslam, Frank Bello (Anthrax), Simon Kirke (Bad Company) and kicks off Season 5 this autumn.

Pioneering British Blues-Rock Band, The Yardbirds, October 2019

October 10 in Rockville, MD and October 13 in Riverhead, NY
The Yardbirds, the band that spearheaded the British Blues Boom of the 1960s, the band that brought the world Eric Clapton in 1963, Jeff Beck in 1965 and Jimmy Page in 1966 (who played in the band with Beck for four months), the band that continues to inspire artists worldwide, will perform two dates in October starting October 10 in Rockville, MD.

The current  lineup includes critically-acclaimed original drummer/composer Jim McCarty, lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist John Idan, whose tenure with the band began in 1992, bassist Kenny Aaronson, who’s lent his considerable talents to Billy Idol, Joan Jett and Hall and Oates over the years, lead guitarist Godfrey Townsend, an amazing player who has performed with numerous rock luminaries including John Entwistle and Jack Bruce and Myke Scavone, ( who is also lead singer in The Doughboys) on harp, percussion and backing vocals.

Known as much for their strict allegiance to the blues as for their international chart-topping hit “For Your Love,” The Yardbirds have never lost their drive and jet-propelled beat, due mainly to Mr. McCarty. Their “Train Kept A’ Rollin’” inspired Aerosmith to tackle the same song. Their early forays into heavy rock inspired Page to form his own band, originally named The New Yardbirds, but ultimately named Led Zeppelin.

The Yardbirds, electrifying, eclectic and way ahead of their time, melded heavy rock, wild jams, the blues, and an improvisatory feel, and continue to influence generations of bands and artists. Go to a Yardbirds show and you'll find crowds filled with 20-somethings to baby boomers all thrilling to this band's legendary power.  Watching The Yardbirds in action is experiencing rock’n’roll history.

In addition, Jim McCarty will be the special guest of Renaissance’s 50th Anniversary performance at the Keswick in Glenside, PA, on the 12th of October. McCarty co-founded the group, and—initially—hired Annie Haslam as the group evolved into an all new lineup.

The Yardbirds 2019 Tour Schedule:
October 10 – Robert E. Parilla PAC – Rockville, MD http://mcblogs.montgomerycollege.edu/reppac/yardbirds/
October 13 – Suffolk Theater – Riverhead, NY http://www.suffolktheater.com/event/066ee961676dd8f912704bd1b0047e78

Nelson Mandela & Peace & Grace & Love

I work quite a bit with music from the African continent, both as a newly published songwriter, and in helping artists from there, most notably Sharon Katz, Wouter Kellerman, Jann Klose, Shawn Phillips, Alex Boye’.  I’ve been a cheerleader for many more!
From South Africa Sharon Katz made CNN News in 1993 as she created and led South Africa’s first, 500-voice multiracial choir. This became a 2015 award-winning documentary, WHEN VOICES MEET, selected for 25 film festivals and shown in over 50 countries, premiering in South Africa. (www.WhenVoicesMeet.com). Sharon Katz & the Peace Train have 5 other albums, and appear on the Rainforest benefit album, “Carnival!” alongside of Sting, Elton John, Madonna, Johnny Clegg…

This is Peace Train,” which appears on her 2002 Grammy-nominated album, “Imbizo.”

Peace Train
by Sharon Katz & Bolden Abrams Jr.(on Sharon Katz & The Peace Train “Imbizo” CD)

Chorus:
We need a sweet survival, love revival Peace Train
Make a heart connection, sweet affection, Peace Train
Come on get on, come on get on, get on The Peace Train (2x)

Meet the Love Conductor, he’s your brother on The Peace Train
Choo Choo, choo choo! (2X)

Sister Ticket Collector, she’s the Hate Deflector, on The Peace Train
Choo Choo, choo choo (2X)

And when you see a child in her mother’s arms and you see her cry coz baby brother died, you know
There’s too much war in our lives
And when you pull your gun you see the children run, you make them terrified, you know
There’s too much war in our lives, I’m terrified
The world is love deprived.

Chorus:  We need a sweet survival, love revival Peace Train……………….

And when you start to cry and your heart hurts inside you know
There’s too much war in our lives
Hate mongers telling lies, a poor girl’s father dies
The tears pour from her eyes and I can’t leave your side
I can’t leave your side
The world is love deprived.

Chorus:     Choo Choo to end

I want to turn you on to the holiday song NEVER TAKE LOVE FOR GRANTED by Dan Berggren.
“Remember it’s the thought that counts!”

Ilona will be performing at the Cutting Room, New York City on August 1.
She has two Nashville gigs: August 5 at the Bluebird, and August 7 at the Basement.

Ilona’s music, to me, is a cross between Pink’s and Taylor Swift’s, and she has grit with energetic pop arrangements.

Her song LOVE IS STUPID is upbeat power pop about tossing and turning late at night because she’s missing her ex. (lyric below)

Gary Lucas' Chinese Pop from the 1930s-'50s has developed quite a following. His partner Feifei Yang with multi-instrumentalist Jason Candler perform new Mandarin versions of songs by Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Jefferson Airplane, plus songs from the earlier part of the 20th Century.

More shows, including today the last day at the Bolshoi Classical Music Festival, performing his original live solo soundtrack based on Russian classical music  accompanying the 1925 silent Soviet comedy “Chess Fever” directed by Vsevolod Pudovkin and Nikolai Shpikovsky.
Please explore www.GaryLucas.com

Here are two artists that almost got away—Americana / Roots Rock & Roll ala Faces, Rolling Stones, Black Crowes is Josh Lewis, whose name I remembered as the original guitarist from one of my all time fave hard rock bands, Warrant.

Elliott Murphy; OPEN CITY:  Bluesy, ethereal guitar, Elliott's voice could be described as a cross between Tom Waits & Petty and Bruce Springsteen. This November is going to be an empowering time for this rock troubadour that the universe has been giving back to.  Soon I'll have complete info. One confirmation is Elliott is playing New York City's Rockwood on November 10.

Rebecca Loebe is a member of the Austin, TX-based trio, NOBODY’S GIRL, who were at the top of the list in this month’s ROLLING STONE for their country-pop cover of Blondie’s CALL ME:   https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-country/10-best-country-and-americana-songs-of-the-week-cam-kenny-chesney-and-more-701812/

DeAngela Napier: Visual Storyteller Profiled in PSYCHOLOGY TODAY Online

Artist Explains How she Uses Photos and Moving Pictures in Creating Music Videos for Gary Lucas & Jann Klose, plus other Artists, Entrepreneurs, and—of course—Organizations!

Dr. Mike Friedman’s BRICK BY BRICK July 19th column in PSYCHOLOGY TODAY features a look at the creator of Gary Lucas & Jann Klose’s latest music video, NOBODY’S TALKING from their album STEREOPTICON.

Dr. Friedman says, ”I think DeAngela Napier’s approach to visual storytelling gives us a window into how we can develop open-minded approach to our lives."

DeAngela Napier is the digital strategist and visual storyteller who is responsible for STEREOPTICON’s music videos (“Secret Wings” and “Fair Weather”). Gary Lucas and Jann Klose’s first two videos offer an insider’s view of New York City while NOBODY’S TALKING’s visuals are comprised of stock footage, selected and edited by DeAngela to convey the tongue-in-cheek lyrical message about everybody talking on their cellphones while they’re surrounded by real people in the real world.

“My work consist of producing content and collaborating with organizations and entrepreneurs on marketing and media strategies. These strategies often include visual storytelling to convey meaning that resonate longer with the listener/viewer.” Her collaborations include producing projects, creating imagery with photography/video and editing digital assets for multi-media projects. In NOBODY’S TALKING, she combines her personal love of music and background in production to craft an entertaining peak at mobile obsession in 2016.
