2025 Summer Missive of New Music from Anne Leighton's Superhero Songwriters

The Most Beautiful Thing in the World (Praxilla) Keira Naughton (on Robin Batteau's "Banned In Sparta," a collaborative album with classic Greek poets, one Roman one, and contemporary Folk Singer-songwriters)  acoustic guitar, gentle female vocals, nature and eloquent lyrics, remembrance of "the most beautiful thing in the world.    Only the thing you leave behind"  "I was your harvest, you were mine." "You were my adonis-you astonish-- me."  Note: This tracks will be embedded mid July after this album's release.

Sleep Alone  Izzy Meth  I believe this could be a great "Song of the Winter." Acoustic, light instruments, gentle tenor with reverb, descriptive lyrical setting in winter and contrast one how he's a young man in love with trouble sleeping 'cause his yearning and morning are still here. "I don't want to sleep alone anymore."

Top of the Rainbow Tom Ciurczak  horns, vocal, tenor-clear distinctive male vocals, like "Toby Beau," a break up song, "I was on top of the rainbow with you, I don't understand when you said you were leaving," self doubt  yacht rock/nu-coast.

2 Pianos Phoebe Legere piano, female singing voice, coaxing piano w/ ice melting, French and English, slow ballad, oceans, memory flashback piano on the tongue of the world to give it a voice. This song is finding its way in soundtracks for Phoebe's collaborations like her new multi-award winning short "The Gender Symphony."

Immigrant Blues  Dan Berggren  folk, banjo, male baritone, simple story song of how immigrants have struggled here and in coming to our country, and those before us are immigrants.  Here's a live performance of Dan's song. Dan was awarded a Lifetime Achievement honor from the Albany NY-region's Eddie Music Awards.

Get My Thing Going  Art Edwards  famous for The Refreshments. This is from a 2024 album, "The Brightness of an Ordinary Star." forward motion, grunge vocals & band with British invasion rhythm, male vocals  "When I finally get my thing going, you're see the best in me." alludes to other worldly torments like the world ending. The Brightness of an Ordinary Star | Art Edwards

Count My Blessings   Elliott Murphy  acoustic guitar, harmonica, narrative voice kindred to Tom Waits.  a bluesy "comfort solution" for a guy that needs reality check for a breakup or his own life, using cowboy imagery and urban issues, "this town's a widow maker" "get out of dodge"

I Am Like a Mountain  Micaela Kingslight   Soft and meditational-inspired rock-pop, vocal percussion and finger-snaps, celestial, female vocals (harmonies)  "I am like a mountain breathing in, breathing in.... I know."  "water, ocean, strong."

Just Enough   Rachael Sage  mid-tempo Hammond B3 and soulful instruments, gentle female vocal, fresh song about feeling love, every time you touch me, I feel love.  "It feels my cup, just enough shalalala"

Please Meet Kalamazoo's Fly Paper

Fly Paper Making New York City debut on May 12
Please welcome the Kalamazoo-based band Fly Paper.  The web site is http://www.flypaperrock.com.

The group will be making its New York City debut at the Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 1, 196 Allen Street, in New York City on May 12 at 7 PM.  Please note this is a 21 and over venue.
The website is www.RockwoodMusicHall.com. If you are in the City next week, come on by and we’ll connect. More dates below.

Fly Paper is a guitar-based, alt-rock and blues band. Leadsinger Micaela Kingslight is the daughter of famous guitar maker John Kingslight. Her singing voice is akin to Sade, Norah Jones, Fiona Apple but with a rocking conviction. Her guitar playing will end up to be a big deal, too.

At the top of the group’s website, flypaperrock.com, is a player that you can click to hear their recent EP and previous album. I can also send you a zip file of some of their songs.

With soulful vocals, a fusion of fierceness and elegance in its guitar sound, and a high energy rhythm section, Fly Paper continues to inspire crowds throughout the country with songs in the alternative blues-rock genre.

When she is not on the road, Micaela Kingslight teaches at Kalamazoo College, Crescendo Academy of Music, and the Kalamazoo Academy of Rock.  Fans have heard Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmore, and Jimmy Page influences in her playing. Bassist Joe Chamberlin fills the space between with a style grounded in both modern and classic rock sensibilities. Sam Rice brings to the drums, the rock groove inspired by both the Smashing Pumpkins’ Jimmy Chamberlin and the flair of Buddy Rich, along with saxman/keyboardist Marty McLean.

The group’s current EP, 3X3 has a song, “Sing, Sing, Sing Along” that is its music video, directed by Michigan native Ben Woody.  Ben is a friend and a multimedia graduate student who has been chronicling Fly Paper over the past few years (in addition to documenting a variety of athletic projects that can be seen at GoGriffs.com). The songs include “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Bigger On The Inside,” and “Say What You Mean” and they tend to capture the band members’ awareness of life, in general, and they can often be found hiking, and Micaela practicing Yoga.

The group has been playing all over the United States with shows from the Florida Keys and Miami to Santa Monica, CA, and Sun Valley, Idaho, to Bremerton, WA. The group is a festival favorite, playing Wild Mountain Faire in Northern California, plus Deadwood Jam, as well as appearing at Michigan's Jamma Wamma Music and Arts Festival, Hoodlilldoo Music Festival, Southwestern Michigan Harvest Festival, and Big Rapid's Cranker's Fest.

Fly Paper have shared the stage with a diverse group of acts including Styx, Stray Cat Lee Rocker, Delhi to Dublin, Mystic Roots, Marcia Griffiths, Jann Klose, Roster McCabe, the4onthefloor, Joe Hertler and The Rainbow Seekers, Josh Davis (from NBCs the Voice) Funktion, and Jamie Lono.

Other music in the group’s history include the fan-funded CD, LIVE AT THE GLOBE THEATER and a DVD.  The group’s debut album, FLY PAPER came out in 2011. In 2013 they released an album, DREAM.

In 2008, Micaela was awarded the Emerging Artist Grant from the Gilmore Foundation to record her first solo album STILL.  She also won Indiegrrl International Songwriting Contest for her song "Aurora.”

Jann Klose is Doing Time

The cover of Jann's Sacrifice EP

I’m reaching out to folks who’ve covered Jann Klose in the past, encouraging everyone to show some interest in his new projects—a video and a digital EP.

The video is “Doing Time,” which is from Jann’s album, REVERIE. Both are great. It’ll be available May 14, and you will see it at http://www.youtube.com/jannklose.

I can e-mail or send-space his digital EP (“Sacrifice”/”Waiting For the Wave”) to you, which will be released May 14 on all the online stores. His fans get the digital EP for free. These songs were recorded during the REVERIE sessions. TIME OUT NEW YORK ran a valid blurb on Jann’s music, “Bronx-based singer-songwriter Jann Klose writes warm, hooky pop music, like a more mature, toned-down version of Jason Mraz.”

Jann Klose’s up-and-coming concerts are turning out to be significant events. He’ll be opening for Willy Porter, Shawn Phillips, Melissa Ferrick, Antigone Rising. Along with Chicago singer-songwriter/violinist Anne Harris, he’s also performing a special event that WGN-Chicago’s overnight team of Steve King and Johnnie Putman are hosting. In the UK, he’s playing the IPO International Pop Overthrow. Over there he’ll be performing shows with German singer-songwriter Robert Carl Blank, Martin Harley, and Steve Rodgers. He’s also speaking and performing at a luncheon for students attending the Rock'n'Roll Fantasy Camp in London.

Some news from new friends:

Three different lady rockers have caught my ears lately, and you can contact them for more information on their music…. All of them would like reviews on their music, so please keep that in mind when you contact them.

Former NY Loose singer Brijitte West has a new band, The Desperate Hopefuls and some darn good punk-delivery in her vocals. Her web site is http://www.brijittewest.com. Contact her at bw@brijittewest.com. For MP3 files to review, e-mail Paul Unger at punger@neo.rr.com

My friend, guitar maker/piano tuner Rick Davies and Jane Sytek turned me on to Micaela Kingslight, who is doing a show with my artist Jann Klose on May 1 in Kalamazoo at the Strutt. Her album is called STILL. She is an incredible guitarist in a vibe to recordings you’d hear by Mark Almond Band, some of the more stretchier ELP and Led Zeppelin songs, while leaning towards softer rock.E-mail booking@micaelakingslight.com. http://micaelakingslight.com/

I think Susan Barth is a devilishly feminine singer in a vocally-melodic realm as the Carpenters. “Perfect Storm” is a hit song. “Chatworth” is an anthem about inconsiderate people. E-mail Pinksoxsongs@aol.com. The web site is http://www.susanbarth.com.

And while I’m at it, the very manly (and Grand Funk Railroad guitarist) Bruce Kulick has another new album, BK3. http://www.kulick.net. BruceKool@aol.com.

JANN KLOSE

Jann Klose's "The Beginning"

If you present or attend house concerts, I would love to talk with you about having Jann Klose perform for you.   He's played house concerts through the years, and they've been a great setting for his unique pop stylings.  They've helped him also build lifelong fans in new markets, who keep coming back to his shows whether at the same house or in a club.

We're also making free downloads available from his album, Reverie via WFUV's HD Radio site.   (Three of Jann's songs are now in the Top Five there with “Doing Time” at number one.)   Please visit http://jannklose.com/audio.html

This April we're releasing Jann's songs “This Sacrifice” and “Waiting for the Wave,” which were recorded during the Reverie sessions but didn't make the album.   They'll be available on iTunes.

WGN Radio's Steve and Johnnie in Chicago are presenting and emcee-ing Jann Klose live at the Skokie Theatre on April 30.   Also on the bill is Anne Harris, please mark your calendars.   Roger Reis of the Chicago Examiner wrote that Reverie is a “phenomenal piece of music that should be a part of everyone's musical library.”   He's right.

Jann Klose Shows:

February 5   Rockwood Music Hall, NYC
March 13    John Street Jam, Saugerties, NY
March 19    Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts Center, Middletown, CT
April 30    The Skokie Theatre, Skokie, IL   w/ Anne Harris
